McCarthys complete series

Scranton’s McCarthy brothers finished a six-game series in Triple-A West Tuesday night with Jake’s visiting Reno Aces rallying for an 11-8 victory over Joe’s Sacramento River Cats.

Both brothers, former Scranton High School multi-sport standouts and University of Virginia baseball players, had hits in the series finale.

Any sibling bragging rights will have to be settled some other time.

The series ended with each team winning three times and the brothers having similar impacts.

Reno won the final two games of the series, including Tuesday’s 11-8 victory when Jake had a triple and scored. Joe had two hits for Sacramento.

Jake, a 23-year-old 10 days into his first time at Triple-A, and Joe, a 27-year-old trying to make it back to the Major Leagues after a brief stint with the San Francisco Giants last season, each had four hits, one double and two RBI in the series.

Both brothers started five of the six games. The night he didn’t start, Joe made an appearance as a pinch hitter, giving him one more at bat in the series than Jake, who had the triple and scored one more run (three to Joe’s two).

The Triple-A West has Wednesday off.

Jake is 5-for-28 (.179) through seven games in Reno, the top farm team of the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Diamondbacks draft Jake 39th overall in 2018.

Joe, who was a fifth-round pick by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 2015 Major League Baseball Draft, remains in the San Francisco farm system following a July 2019 trade. He is batting .289 in 39 games this season.

Reno leads the five-team West Division of Triple-A West with a 31-17 record while Sacramento is last at 20-27.
