Wallenpaupack used a Robert Spagna Lackawanna Track Conference Championship Meet Class 3A girls title-winning performance to continue a steady climb through the Riverfront Sports Super Six Track and Field Power Rankings of District 2 teams.
The Lady Buckhorns, who are up two spots to second in the Big School girls rankings, get a shot to continue the climb when the District 2 Track and Field Championships are conducted Tuesday and Wednesday at Scranton Memorial Stadium.
The new rankings were released early Monday afternoon.
The Valley View, Scranton and Blue Ridge boys also moved up this week along with the Holy Redeemer girls. Like the three LTC teams that moved up, the Abington Heights boys, Lakeland boys and Riverside girls used strong efforts in the Spagna Championships to rejoin the rankings.
Division champions occupy the top two spots in all four rankings.
Three of the four No. 1 teams – the North Pocono boys, Mid Valley boys and Dallas girls – are defending district champions who followed up that success with division titles this season.
The Montrose girls are ranked first among Small Schools.
North Pocono and Crestwood are 1-2 in Big School boys following championship efforts.
The Trojans won the Class 3A boys title at the Spagna Championships. The Comets won their last two regular-season meets, including a head-to-head, first-place battle with Dallas, to win Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1.
LTC Division 1 tri-champions Valley View, Scranton and Abington Heights finished second through fourth behind North Pocono at the Spagna Championships and used that to climb into the third, fourth and fifth positions in the Big School rankings.
Valley View jumped up three spots, Scranton moved up one and Abington Heights came back into the rankings in fifth.
Wallenpaupack dropped from third to sixth.
Dallas, formerly the No. 4 team, fell from the rankings after a 111-39 loss to Crestwood.
Mid Valley ran away with the Spagna Championships Class 2A title to hold off No. 2 Wyoming Area and maintain the top spot in the rankings going into districts.
Wyoming Area added a non-league win over Wyoming Valley West during the week. The Warriors had already completed their WVC Division 2 championship season.
Holy Redeemer held third.
LTC Division 4 champion Blue Ridge used a second-place Spagna Championships finish to gain another position into fourth, swapping with Dunmore.
Lakeland replaces Scranton Prep in sixth after taking third at the Spagna Championships.
Dallas won a meeting of unbeatens from Crestwood to secure the WVC Division 1 title and hold on to first in the Big School girls rankings.
LTC Division 2 champion Wallenpaupack jumped from fourth to second after beating out 15-time LTC Division 1 champion Abington Heights, the No. 3 team, for the Spagna title in Class 3A.
Crestwood slipped from second to fourth.
Hazleton Area and Pittston Area remained in fifth and sixth after Hazleton Area won their head-to-head meeting for the third spot in WVC Division 1.
LTC Division 4 champion Montrose and WVC Division 2 champ Wyoming Area remain 1-2 in Small School girls.
Lake-Lehman and LTC Division 3 champ Lakeland held third and fourth.
Defending district champion Holy Redeemer moved up one spot to fifth.
Riverside beat out Montrose for the Spagna title and rejoined the rankings as the sixth team after finishing third in LTC Division 3 during the regular season.
Former No. 5 Holy Cross dropped from the rankings.
The rankings are an attempt to assess teams both on their head-to-head, dual-meet strength and as a team for large invitationals, which can, at times, take different types of lineups to produce success.
All dual meet competition is complete, but the teams will be ranked again following the district championships.
