ROUNDUP: AH defeats Prep in golf

Cade Kelleher and Robert Munley each shot 38s Wednesday, Sept. 14 as Abington Heights defeated Scranton Prep, 154-159, in a non-league match between the unbeaten leaders of the Lackawanna League’s two golf divisions.

The Comets had four players break 40 with Luke Morgan and Alec Hamilton adding 39s.

Gavin Walsh shot 38, Dan Flynn 39, Antonio Ingarziola 40 and Ben Walsh 42 for Scranton Prep.

Abington Heights is the No. 2 Big School and Scranton Prep is the No. 1 Small School in the Riverfront Sports Super Six Golf Power Rankings of District 2 teams.

Crestwood, the No. 1 Big School, clinched at least a tie for the Wyoming Valley Conference Class 3A Division with a 148-187 victory over Pittston Area.

Derek Johnson shot a 2-under-par, 33 and Owen Blazick added a 34 at Fox Hill Country Club to lead the victory.

Tunkhannock defeated Wyoming Valley West, 151-174, in another WVC Class 3A match.

Michal Lugiano shot a 3-under-par, 33 as Lake-Lehman remained unbeaten with a 151-186 victory over Berwick in a WVC Class 2A match at Huntsville Golf Club.

Holy Redeemer avenged an earlier loss when it edged Wyoming Seminary, 152-153.

North Pocono defeated Scranton, 8-1; Wallenpaupack nipped Valley View, 5-4; and Delaware Valley downed West Scranton, 7½-1½ in Lackawanna League Class 3A Division matches.

Both Lackawanna Class 2A Division matches were decided by 5-4 scores with Carbondale beating Lakeland and Holy Cross defeating Mid Valley.

GIRLS TENNIS

Lackawanna League unbeatens Scranton Prep and Wallenpaupack each won meetings with teams that entered the day with only one loss.

Scranton Prep shut out Valley View, 5-0, and Wallenpaupack defeated West Scranton, 3-2.

Erika Badner recovered from not winning a game in the first set to win the next two and take No. 1 singles for Wallenpaupack.

Sarah Niemiec and Hailey Hopkins-Amy Fago provided the other points in straight sets while West Scranton needed three sets to score both of its team points.

Abington Heights also remained unbeaten when it defeated Riverside, 4-1.

Riverside’s Bella Aniska battled past Susan Arp, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 1 singles, but Abington Heights dropped just one game in the other eight sets, wins by Rina Hanumali, Sona Hanumali, Hanna Adonizio-Faith Bennett and Mary Booth-Bernie Mullin.

In other Lackawanna League matches: Scranton edged Delaware Valley, 3-2; Dunmore downed Honesdale, 3-2; Holy Cross shut out Montrose, 5-0; and Mid Valley beat Western Wayne, 3-2.

Wyoming Seminary remained unbeaten in the Wyoming Valley Conference with a 5-0 shutout of Holy Redeemer.

Crestwood swept doubles and received a three-set victory from Camerone Carlos at No. singles in a 4-1 victory over Hanover Area.

In other WVC matches: Dallas blanked Berwick, 5-0; Wyoming Area defeated MMI Prep, 4-1; and Hazleton Area edged Wyoming Valley West, 3-2.

FIELD HOCKEY

Therese Ciaccia scored goals less than a minute apart late in the first half to lead Lake-Lehman to a 3-2 victory over Lackawanna Trail in a Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 match between teams in the Golden Dome Abstract Super Six Power Rankings of District 2 teams.

Ciaccia, who also assisted on the game’s first goal, gave Lake-Lehman a 3-1 lead.

Lackawanna Trail peppered the Lake-Lehman cage with shots, but goalie Faye Post made 21 saves and Rachel Galasso added 5 defensive saves.

In other WVC Division 1 games: Wyoming Area ripped Hazleton Area, 8-1; Wyoming Valley West shut out Dallas, 2-0; Honesdale blanked Wilkes-Barre Area, 3-0; and Wyoming Seminary ripped Delaware Valley, 13-0.

Lyla Rehill scored five goals, including four in the fourth quarter when Wyoming Area pulled away from what had been a 2-1 game.

Emma Watchilla scored six goals and assisted three for Wyoming Seminary.

Berwick and Hanover Area played to a scoreless tie in WVC Division 2.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL2

Pittston Area became the first team to win a set against Holy Redeemer this season, but the Lady Royals recovered quickly to win the Wyoming Valley Conference match, 28-30, 25-16, 25-21, 25-19.

Kaylee Gryboski had 14 kills and Olivia Bilbow added 13 for Holy Redeemer

Jess Ostrowski had 10 assists and 8 service points for Pittston Area.

The other WVC matches were all sweeps: Crestwood over MMI Prep; Hazleton Area over Nanticoke; and Tunkhannock over Wyoming Valley West.

BOYS SOCCER

Dylan Shorten’s hat trick led Wallenpaupack past Scranton, 6-1, in a Lackawanna League Division 1 game.

Mayor Castro-Lemus scored four goals in Dunmore’s 12-3, non-league rout of Forest City.

Brian Santarsiero added three goals while Tommy Clark and Max Hunt scored two each.

GIRLS SOCCER

Bryn Stiles assisted the first goal and scored the second for Abington Heights in a 2-0, non-league victory over Wyoming Seminary.

Elk Lake routed Carbondale, 11-1, in a Lackawanna League Division 3 game.
