ROUNDUP: Cougars soccer teams sweep games against Lakeland

Ryien Carroll made 10 saves in a shutout and Valley View took advantage of two goals in the first 16 minutes Saturday while beating host Lakeland, 2-0, in a meeting of ranked girls soccer teams.

Valley View is the No. 6 Big School and Lakeland the No. 1 Small School in the Riverfront United Super Six Soccer Power Rankings of District 2 teams.

Shannon Gillen and Mia Cesarini scored for the Cougars. Evan Canevari assisted Cesarini’s goal.

Micayla Arzie made 15 saves for Lakeland.

In other non-league games: Dunmore downed North Pocono, 3-1; Crestwood defeated Mountain View, 7-1; Nanticoke shut out West Scranton, 5-1; and Bloomsburg beat Berwick, 6-1.

Kaylie Zimmer scored two goals for Dunmore.

Wallenpaupack, Wilkes-Barre Area, Elk Lake and Wyoming Valley West all played in tournaments.

Wallenpaupack split games at Bellefonte, Wilkes-Barre Area split games at Central Columbia, Wyoming Valley West split at Montoursville; and Elk Lake lost twice at Northeast Bradford.

Wallenpaupack’s loss came, 3-2, to Greensburg Central Catholic, last year’s Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class A state runner-up. The Lady Buckhorns bounced back to beat the hosts, 4-1.

BOYS SOCCER

Luke Kotcho scored two goals and Bryce Sokoloski converted a long free kick in the second half when they combined to rally Valley View past Lakeland, 4-2, in a non-league game.

In other non-league games: Dunmore defeated North Pocono, 3-2; Crestwood edged Mountain View, 4-3, in overtime; Holy Cross shut out Old Forge, 8-0; Holy Redeemer blanked Wyoming Area, 1-0; Central Columbia routed Nanticoke, 7-0; and Warwick Valley (N.Y.) ripped Scranton Prep, 6-1.

Maynor Castro-Lemus assisted the first two goals, then scored the game-winner for Dunmore.

Carmen DeNapoli and Max Hunt also scored. Tommy Clark had an assist.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Mountain View swept Hanover Area in three sets in a non-league match.

FIELD HOCKEY

Crestwood lost to Mechanicsburg, 1-0, before bouncing back to hammer the hosts, 8-0, at the Big Spring Tournament.

Pittston Area shut out Delaware Valley, 2-0, and Selinsgrove edged Wyoming Valley West, 2-1, in non-league games.
