ROUNDUP: Tight matches fill day in Lackawanna D1 boys soccer

Very little separated the Lackawanna League Division 1 boys soccer teams Monday.

Abington Heights held on to first place by defeating defending champion North Pocono, 2-1, on a day when defense and tight play ruled the division.

Wallenpaupack posted a 1-0 victory over Honesdale and the other two games – Valley View-Scranton Prep and Delaware Valley-Scranton resulted in 1-1 ties.

Rob Saunders scored with 14 minutes left to break the tie at North Pocono.

Jayden Patel assisted the game-winner.

Abington Heights led 1-0 at halftime.

Zach Evans tied the game for North Pocono 2:30 into the second half on an assist from Eliot Bowen.

Anthony Mucciolo’s overtime goal lifted Old Forge over Blue Ridge, 1-0, in Lackawanna Division 3.

Maynor Castro-Lemus had a hat trick while Max Hunt and Quinn Davis scored two goals each in Dunmore’s 12-5 win over West Scranton in Lackawanna Division 2.

Mountain View shut out Gregory the Great, 5-0, and Lakeland edged Western Wayne, 2-1, in other Division 2 games.

Shane Macko’s overtime goal gave Tunkhannock a 3-2 Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 victory over Wilkes-Barre Area.

GIRLS SOCCER

Four of the five games ended in shutouts.

Halle Kranson scored three goals while Anna Wisnewski and Hannah Fairchild added two each when Wyoming Area routed Tunkhannock, 8-0, in Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2.

In other WVC Division 2 games: Lake-Lehman shut out Hanover Area, 9-0, and Wyoming Seminary edged Nanticoke, 2-1.

Isabella Granteed scored four goals as Holy Redeemer routed Dunmore, 7-0, in a non-league game.

Mountain View blanked Holy Cross, 5-0, in another non-league game.

BOYS GOLF

Abington Heights faced a test to its unbeaten record while playing in the rain at the Country Club at Woodloch Springs, but escaped with a 5-4, Lackawanna League Class 3A Division victory over host Wallenpaupack.

The teams were even in the first and last foursomes.

Robby Lucas won his singles match and combined with Robert Munley for the better-ball point in the middle foursome for the Comets.

Wallenpaupack’s Kevin Wortmann shot a 1-over-par, 37, won his singles match and helped split better ball. He had a birdie on 9.

Luke Morgan birdied 1 and won his singles match for Abington Heights in the same foursome.

Cade Kelleher had two birdies and won his singles match in the last foursome.

Grady Hearn and Jamison Ostrowski also won singles points for the Buckhorns.

In other Class 3A matches: Honesdale shut out West Scranton, 9-0; North Pocono defeated Valley View, 6-3; and Delaware Valley downed Scranton, 6½-2½.

Lorenzo Domiano and Sami Duffy swept the three middle foursome points in the minimum five holes as Lackawanna Trail defeated Western Wayne, 7½-1½, in a Lackawanna Class 2A Division match.

In other Lackawanna Class 2A matches: Riverside defeated Blue Ridge, 7-2; Holy Cross downed Old Forge, 6-3; and Mountain View beat Lakeland, 5-4.

Patrick Ruane shot a 4-over-par, 39 on the front nine at Fox Hill Country Club as Pittston Area nipped Wilkes-Barre Area, 173-174, in a Wyoming Valley Conference Class 3A Division match.

Matt Mesaris added a 43 in the win and no Patriot shot higher than 46.

Mike Hamel led Wilkes-Barre Area with a 37.

Crestwood remained unbeaten with a 157-180 victory over Wyoming Area in another WVC Class 3A match.

Owen Blazick shot a 1-over-par, 37 at Blue Ridge Trail and Tommy Biscotti added a 39 in the win.

Hazleton Area handled Wyoming Valley West, 154-200, in the other Class 3A match.

Lake-Lehman solidified its lead in the WVC Class 2A Division when it posted an under-par team score in a 141-168 victory over second-place Holy Redeemer.

Michael Lugiano shot a 3-under-par, 33 at Huntsville Golf Club.

The Ropietski brothers, Eli and Cael, each shot 35 against their former team.

Charlie Weidner added a 38.

Jake Koons led Holy Redeemer with a 39.

MMI Prep defeated Nanticoke, 188-209, in the other WVC Class 2A match.

FIELD HOCKEY

Wyoming Seminary built a four-goal, fourth-quarter lead, with the help of two goals by Ella Barbacci, in a 4-3, Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 victory over Wyoming Valley West.

Lyla Rehill scored three goals and assisted on one in Wyoming Area’s 6-0, non-league victory over Abington Heights.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Kaylee Gryboski had eight kills and six service points as unbeaten Holy Redeemer swept Wyoming Area, 15-8, 25-7, 25-14, in a Wyoming Valley Conference match.

Olivia Bilbow added 7 kills and 16 points.

Two other matches ended in three sets, with Dunmore beating Abington Heights in the Lackawanna League and Lake-Lehman defeating Wilkes-Barre Area in the WVC.

GIRLS TENNIS

Both Lackawanna League matches resulted in 5-0 shutouts, Delaware Valley over Dunmore and Abington Heights over Holy Cross.
