Shields lands first scholarship offer

Jason Shields on Wednesday became the second NEPA Elite Coyle 17U boys team player to receive a basketball scholarship offer from Georgian Court University this week.

The offer from the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II school in Lakewood, N.J. was the first for the 6-foot-5 rising senior from Scranton High School.

Shields was the leading scorer, hitting as many as seven 3-pointers in a game, while the Coyle team was winning 10 of 13 games to finish the season.

At Scranton, Shields was the Lackawanna League Division 1 Player of the Year and a first-team, all-District 2 selection, according to NEPABasketball.com, after leading the Knights to the division title and a District 2-4 Class 6A Subregional championship.

Georgian Court had its final three games canceled in an already-shortened 2020-21 Central Atlantic Athletic Conference schedule and finished 2-5. The Lions were 7-12 and 9-18 in the 2019-20 season.

Located about 10 miles from the Jersey Shore, midway between Philadelphia and New York City, Georgian Court became fully coeducational in 2013 “after a long history as a women’s college with coeducational graduate programs and undergraduate evening programs,” according to its website.

The school has also offered a scholarship to NEPA Elite’s Justice Shoats, a rising senior at Holy Redeemer.
