Two golf showdowns and a pair of events that send North Pocono teams to Scranton Prep highlight a 49-event Thursday schedule across 6 District 2 sports.
North Pocono is at Scranton Prep in both golf and girls tennis.
Also, Hazleton Area is at Crestwood in a match between the unbeaten Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 golf co-leaders. Both teams are 4-0.
North Pocono (3-2 in division, 4-2 overall) can’t duplicate Scranton Prep’s unbeaten record in Lackawanna League Division 1 golf, but the Trojans are the only team this season to finish in front of the defending state Class 2A champions (5-0, 6-0).
Scranton Prep won their first league meeting, 5-4, at Elmhurst Country Club, using the league’s match play format. In the Bob Simons Classic, using the medal play format that will be in place for the postseason, North Pocono finished ahead of Scranton Prep to claim the title.
The teams will not, however, meet in the postseason. North Pocono is a Class 3A school.
The schools also meet in girls tennis where defending champion Scranton Prep (3-0) is currently in third place and North Pocono (4-1) is fourth in the 15-team league. The Classics are one-half match behind Abington Heights and Riverside, which are both 4-0 and also have matches.
Delaware Valley (1-0, 2-0) is at Nanticoke (1-0, 1-0) in a Wyoming Valley Conference girls volleyball match between two of the top four teams in the Electric City Volleyball Academy Elite Eight Power Rankings.
League play continues to open around the district.
It is Opening Day for WVC Division 1 boys soccer, WVC Division 2 girls soccer and the remainder of Lackawanna Division 1 girls soccer.
There is non-league play in field hockey where WVC Division 1 does not open until next week.
