Wolfe-Shamany combination produces Hazleton Area winner

Tyler Wolfe threw his third touchdown pass of the night, finding Connor Shamany for the second time, with 28.7 seconds left to lift host Hazleton Area to a 21-14 victory over Pittston Area in a non-league football game between Wyoming Valley Conference members.

Hazleton Area won its second straight to even its record at 2-2. To do so, the Cougars had to recover after Pittston Area (1-3) erased a 14-point deficit over the final 15½ minutes to force a late tie.

Wolfe finished 21-for-27 for 247 yards passing. He hit Shamany with a 16-yard touchdown pass to break a 14-14 tie.

Shamany had caught a 65-yard pass early in the second quarter to create the 14-0 lead. He finished with 5 catches for 111 yards.

Matthew Cusatis had 9 catches for 79 yards.

Jose Rodriguez made 3 catches for 25 yards, including a 10-yarder in the last minute of the first quarter to open the scoring.

Harry Pugliese ran for 77 yards and 2 touchdowns to lead Pittston Area’s comeback. He scored on 3-yard runs in the third and fourth quarters.

Drew DeLucca completed 12 passes for more than 100 yards for the Patriots.
