Skylar Long and Katherine Shepherd had 12 kills each Saturday when Western Wayne opened the Lackawanna League girls volleyball season by winning a five-set match over visiting Dunmore in a meeting of two teams regarded as threats to North Pocono’s title defense.
Dunmore opened the season ranked fifth and Western Wayne seventh in the Electric City Volleyball Elite Eight Power Rankings of District 2 teams across all classifications.
Dunmore took the first set, but Western Wayne rallied for a 22-25, 25-22, 25-22, 20-25, 15-7.
Emily Romanowski added eight kills, seven digs and two aces.
Kaeli Romanowski had 31 assists and shared the team lead of 9 digs with Jaque Morris.
CROSS COUNTRY
Holy Redeemer finished third out of 13 girls teams and fourth out of 17 boys teams in the Class A/2A Division at the Northampton Invitational.
Grant Smith led the boys by finishing sixth and Tom Brady was 10th out of 126 in the boys race.
Lexie Marcinkowski led the girls, finishing 10th in the 101-runner field. Emily Lehman was 18th.
BOYS SOCCER
Crestwood overcame a halftime deficit to win, 2-1, at Abington Heights in a non-league game.
An own goal 2:41 into the second half created the tie.
Ben Rossi’s unassisted goal nine minutes later was the winner.
Abington Heights, which got a Michael Maldonado goal 2:37 before halftime, had an 11-10 lead in shots.
Cole Kranson made five saves for Crestwood.
Tyler Pepsin scored both goals to lead Old Forge to a 2-1 win over Dunmore in a non-league game between Lackawanna League teams.
Brian Santarsiero scored for Dunmore.
Ron Prislupski scored six goals and assisted on two others when Holy Cross routed Holy Redeemer, 10-0.
In other non-league action: Pittston Area edged Nanticoke, 4-3; Valley View blanked Lakeland, 9-0; Gregory the Great defeated West Scranton, 3-1; Mountain View edged Northeast Bradford, 3-2; and Benton Area shut out Berwick, 6-0.
Lake-Lehman finished last in the four-team Montoursville Tournament, falling to Danville, 7-0, then Montoursville, 4-1.
GIRLS SOCCER
Esabella Mendola scored a hat trick as Wilkes-Barre Area opened with a 3-1 victory over Wyoming Area as part of a busy day of non-league action.
Wallenpaupack and Western Wayne played to a 1-1 tie.
Jaden Gregory scored for Western Wayne and Anastasia Ioppolo for Wallenpaupack.
Regan Curraba had two goals and two assists as Delaware Valley downed Bangor, 7-0.
Elizabeth Meagher scored twice for Honesdale in a 5-0 victory over Mid Valley.
Abington Heights returned from a year off to defeat Mountain View, 9-0.
Berwick knocked off defending Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class 2A state champion Bloomsburg, 2-1.
In other games: Dallas defeated Lewisburg, 5-3; Elk Lake edged North Penn-Mansfield, 4-3; Nanticoke beat Pittston Area, 3-2; Holy Redeemer pounded Holy Cross, 17-0; and Lakeland edged Valley View, 2-1.
Wyoming Valley West shut out Troy, 5-0, at the Montoursville Tournament before falling to the hosts, 4-1, in the final.
Mifflinburg shut out Lake-Lehman, 6-0, at the Central Columbia Tournament. The Lady Knights bounced back to take third place with a 1-0 victory over East Juniata.
FIELD HOCKEY
Crestwood and Honesdale each won by 5-0 shutouts to become the first two District 2 teas at 2-0.
Crestwood downed Abington Heights and Honesdale topped Wallenpaupack.
State-ranked Wyoming Area went on the road and defeated Lewisburg, 3-1.
