FRIDAY ROUNDUP: Pittston Area takes field hockey division lead

Pittston Area won while Wallenpaupack and Abington Heights played to a tie, leaving the Lady Patriots alone in the early Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 field hockey lead following Friday’s action.

The Lady Patriots shut out Berwick, 8-0, to improve to 2-0 in the division.

Defending champion Wallenpaupack and Abington Heights are both 1-0-1 after they played to a 2-2 tie.

Two of the three games played resulted in ties through the 7v7 overtime periods.

Dallas and Tunkhannock played to a scoreless tie in a non-league game.

At one point last season, Hanover Area was bringing an end to a 54-match WVC losing streak.

Now, for the second straight season, the Lady Hawkeyes are working on a three-match winning streak.

The latest victory was a 5-0 shutout of Wyoming Valley West.

Hanover Area evened its record at 3-3 and moved firmly into the middle of the conference standings – in a three-way tie for sixth, ahead of five teams, behind five teams and even with two – following years at the bottom.

Number-one singles player Karlee Yuscavage and the second doubles team of Madison Elick-Maggie Murphy each won, 6-1, 6-0.

Stephanie Lewis, at second singles, and Allie Richards-Brenna Slusser, at first doubles, each dropped the first set, 6-1, before coming back to win three-set matches.

Hanover Area received a forfeit at third singles.

Scranton Prep remained undefeated in the Lackawanna League with a 5-0 shutout of Delaware Valley.

In other WVC matches: Dallas shut out Wilkes-Barre Area, 5-0, Holy Redeemer blanked Tunkhannock, 4-0; Wyoming Area defeated Hazleton Area, 4-1; and Pittston Area defeated MMI Prep, 4-1.

Wyoming Area got three-set wins from Ava Vacula at third singles and the team of Jillian Graham-Erica Gilligan at second doubles.

Bethany Yashkus won, 6-0, 6-0, at third singles, one of three straight-set wins for Pittston Area, which also added a forfeit point at second doubles.
