GIRLS BASKETBALL ALL-STARS: Lackawanna League Division 4

Mia Snyder’s role in keeping Montrose on a championship path has led to the senior’s selection as the Player of the Year on the Lackawanna League Division 4 girls basketball all-star team released by NEPASportsNation.com Monday morning.

The Lady Meteors won their third straight division title and Snyder joined teammate Hayley Pompey in landing postseason recognition for the fourth straight time.

Snyder averaged 15 points and well over two 3-pointers per game while becoming a 1,000-point scorer and setting a school record with seven 3-pointers in a game. She also took over as the team’s point guard when a midseason injury threatened to disrupt the Lady Meteors’ march to their latest title.

The Player of the Year honor caps a career in which Snyder was a second-team, all-star as a freshman and a first-teamer each of the past two seasons. Those selections were made by NEPABasketball.com, which this season became part of NEPASportsNation.com for coverage of all District 2 sports.

Pompey is a four-time, first-team selection.

While Montrose remained on top, Bill Simons was named Coach of the Year for leading Mountain View’s dramatic climb in the standings. The Lady Eagles moved from sixth in the seven-team division a year ago into a tie for second, improving from 2-10 to 9-3 before later adding the school’s first District 2 championship and advancing to the semifinals of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association state Class A tournament.

The rest of the first team and the entire second team is made up of newcomers to the all-star selections.

Mountain View freshman Addison Kilmer is joined on the first team by Lackawanna Trail’s Mackenzie Schirg, Blue Ridge’s Emma Button and Susquehanna’s Lexi Iveson.

In addition to the second team, Lackawanna Division 4 is one of two where an additional player is being recognized.

The NEPASportsNation.com all-star teams generally only have an honorable mention list in Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 because it has more teams than any of the other divisions.

Montrose’s Aspen Smith, however, is listed as special honorable mention on this season’s team. Smith, a first-teamer a year ago, again played on a first-team level and was in position to be a candidate for Player of the Year before going out with a season-ending knee injury before the midway point in the league season.
