Gwynedd-Mercy wins tourney

Gwynedd-Mercy Academy started strong, then finished by holding North Pocono to one second-half field goal while routing the host Lady Trojans, 44-17, Thursday in the championship game of the James Akens Tournament.

Bailey Balkir led Gwynedd-Mercy with 10 points.

Tournament Most Valuable Player Hannah Griffin and Megan McDonnell had five points each in the first quarter when Gwynedd-Mercy took a 15-4 lead. Griffin finished with eight points.

Gwynedd-Mercy held North Pocono to two points each in the third and fourth quarters.

Samantha Polishan led the Lady Trojans with five points.

Balkir and North Pocono’s Abby Lenchitsky made the all-tournament team.

Wyoming Valley West 63, Crestwood 50

Mackenzie Perluke scored 15 points to lead four Wyoming Valley West players in double figures in the Akens consolation game.

The win was the second by Wyoming Valley West over Crestwood in nine days. The teams had also met in a Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 opener.

Thalia Irizarry added 12 points in the win while Gabby Marsola and Hailee Oliphant had 11 each.

Cadence Hiller led Crestwood with 15 points.

After winning the first meeting by seven points, Wyoming Valley West took control in the rematch, leading 18-7 after one quarter, 31-16 at halftime and 45-24 going into the fourth quarter.

Perluke and Hiller made the all-tournament team.
