Scranton pulls out last-minute win

Scranton’s season is turning in the right direction just as the Lackawanna Football Conference Division 1 portion of the schedule is getting started.

The Knights rallied to tie the game early in the fourth quarter, then won it on Antonio Hairston’s 2-yard touchdown run with 52.9 seconds left Friday night, turning back visiting Wallenpaupack, 27-21.

The win, in the division opener for the team, was Scranton’s second straight and third in the last four weeks to improve to 3-3.

Wallenpaupack fell to 0-2 in the division and 2-4 overall by losing its fourth straight.

The Buckhorns led early, then went back in front 3:08 before halftime. They carried that 21-14 advantage into the fourth quarter.

Charlie Thompson, who finished with 111 yards and 2 touchdowns on 24 carries, tied the game on a 3-yard run with 9:07 remaining.

Mabret Levant passed to T.J. Schmalzle for two touchdowns for Wallenpaupack. The first, a 21-yarder, opened the scoring. The second, a 7-yarder midway through the second quarter, tied the game at 14-14.

Thompson’s 30-yard run and a 1-yard quarterback sneak by Arvel Chandler had moved Scranton in front, 14-7, after one quarter.

Shadrak Agyei’s 1-yard touchdown gave Wallenpaupack its 21-14 lead.

Scranton’s defense shut out Wallenpaupack in the second half, giving an offense that produced 389 yards a chance to pull out the victory.

Chandler finished 8-for-10 for 167 yards passing while carrying 12 times for 76 yards.

Donato Stepney caught 6 passes for 88 yards and Hairston caught 2 for 79 yards.

Thompson added an interception to his 100-yard rushing effort.
