Soma, defense lead North Pocono

Will Soma’s scrambling ability allowed him to pick up tough yards at times in Friday night’s District 2 Class 4A football quarterfinal.

It also gave him the room needed to open the scoring in the final minute of the first quarter, sending North Pocono on its way to a 27-0 victory over visiting Honesdale.

Soma broke out of a potential sack on third-and-12, rolled right, pulled up just before the line of scrimmage as he approached the sideline and found Danny Smith down the sideline for a 26-yard touchdown.

On a night when he passed for 207 yards and 2 touchdowns, Soma also kept the offense moving with runs of 9 and 8 yards.

Soma hit Ashton Smith deep for a 55-yard gain and short for what turned into a 23-yard touchdown. He connected on another deep ball to Ty LaFave for 33 yards.

Danny Smith also led a pass defense that limited Honesdale to 42 yards on 16 attempts. He had an interception that led to his own touchdown.

They combined with a Michael Blaine touchdown run and two Jordan Carr field goals to more than offset strong games by Honesdale’s Connor Schmitt and Max Mickel.

Schmitt carried 25 times for 132 yards. Mickel had 15 tackles, including a sack that forced a fumble.

North Pocono improved to 9-2 with its fourth shutout in an eight-game stretch in which it has allowed just 31 points.

Honesdale finished 4-7.
