TUESDAY ROUNDUP: Giardina, Pisano lead PA field hockey win

Arianna Pisano made 15 saves and Bella Giardina scored twice, including the game-winner, Tuesday as Pittston Area handed host Abington Heights its first Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 field hockey loss, 2-1.

Giardina scored the game’s first goal, then broke a tie with 4:10 left.

Madison Zalewski scored the Abington Heights goal on an extended penalty corner with time expired in the first half.

Abington Heights had advantages of 16-4 in shots on goal and 10-1 in penalty corners, but Pisano made sure it did not matter.

Pittston Area improved to 4-2 in the division and 5-4 overall. Abington Heights fell to 2-1-1 and 2-4-1.

Nanticoke shut out Tunkhannock, 4-0, in another WVC Division 2 game.

GIRLS SOCCER

Halle Kranson scored the game-winning goal and added assists on the game’s first and last goals when Wyoming Area defeated visiting Nanticoke, 4-1, in a WVC Division 2 game.

Hannah Fairchild had a goal and an assist.

Alexis Atkins scored for Nanticoke.

Olivia Allen made eight saves for the win.

Wyoming Seminary shut out Hanover Area, 4-0, and Holy Redeemer handled Tunkhannock, 6-1, in other WVC Division 2 games.

Abby Kimler had a hat trick to lead Wallenpaupack to a 5-2 victory over Scranton Prep in Lackawanna League Division 1.

Maggie Ratchford scored three goals in the first 25:11 for Abington Heights, which scored seven times in the first half on the way to an 11-0 rout of winless Scranton in another Lackawanna Division 1 game.

The other two Division 1 games were 1-0 shutouts with Delaware Valley beating Honesdale and Valley View beating North Pocono.

Kaylie Zimmer, Giulie Escobar and Alisha Davis scored twice each as Dunmore shut out Mid Valley, 8-0, in a Lackawanna Division 2-3 crossover game.

Addy Toole added a goal and three assists while Sophia Talutto had a goal and one assist.

In other Lackawanna Division 2-3 games: Holy Cross shut out West Scranton, 2-0; Western Wayne defeated Forest City, 5-1; Mountain View blanked Elk Lake, 6-0; and Lakeland routed Carbondale, 19-0.

BOYS SOCCER

Charlie Sleyo and Evan Kaiser scored to lift Lake-Lehman over Holy Redeemer, 2-1, in a game between two of the top four teams in WVC Division 2.

Wyoming Valley West downed Pittston Area, 5-1, in WVC Division 1.

West Scranton defeated Nanticoke, 3-1, in non-league play.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Myla Vnuk had 25 kills while Brooklyn Biehl had 31 assists as Nanticoke defeated Lake-Lehman in four sets in a WVC match.

The Trojanettes recovered from dropping the first set to win, 23-25, 25-11, 25-11, 25-19.

Sierra Hillebrand and Alexandra Sheridan each had 13 kills as Hanover Area swept Wyoming Area.

The Lady Hawkeyes had to work through close first and third sets to win, 25-23, 25-12, 27-25.

Unbeaten Delaware Valley swept Wyoming Valley West.

Emily Henn had 11 kills, 14 service points and 8 aces in a 25-14, 25-7, 25-11 romp.

Leah Weinreb added 13 points, 7 aces and 7 kills. Olivia Conza had 22 assists.

Jazmyne Bates had 12 points, 5 kills and 2 aces.

Katherine Quinn had six points, five kills and three aces.

Pittston Area swept Wilkes-Barre Area with set scores of 25-12, 25-6, 25-7.

Abington Heights topped Forest City in four sets in a Lackawanna League Division 1-2 crossover.
