Wyoming Area and Lake-Lehman combined for 10 second-half goals Wednesday before the first-place Warriors eventually emerged with an 8-5 victory in a meeting of Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 boys soccer contenders.
Kendall Heck scored six goals, beginning with the goal that broke a 1-1 tie with less than three minutes left in the first half.
After Lake-Lehman tied the game early in the second half on Cole Kaiser’s second goal, Heck scored three straight, including two on Shawn Pawlowski assists, for a 5-2 lead.
Pawlowski, who finished with two goals and three assists, scored to make it 6-2.
The Black Knights rallied to get within 7-5 on consecutive Charles Sleyo goals on two of Ben Wnuk’s four assists.
Heck’s final goal helped secure the win.
The win kept first-place Wyoming Area unbeaten overall. Lake-Lehman, which had won its previous three division games, dropped out of a second-place tie.
Nanticoke shut out MMI Prep, 6-0, and Holy Redeemer handled Hanover Area, 8-3, in other WVC Division 2 games.
Ethan Egenski and Jeter Cardona scored twice each for Nanticoke.
Holy Redeemer took over sole possession of second place.
North Pocono and Abington Heights each won Lackawanna League Division 1 games, 3-0.
Corbin Lankford scored the first and third goals for North Pocono, which did all its scoring in the first 30 minutes of a win over visiting Delaware Valley.
Peter Sica also scored. Jonah Yurkanin and Cayden Lougee had the assists.
North Pocono built advantages of 21-5 in shots and 8-2 in corner kicks.
Chris Clauss, Jayden Patel and Kevin Guditus scored for Abington Heights in the win over Wallenpaupack.
Unbeaten Valley View shut out Scranton, 4-0, and Honesdale edged Scranton Prep, 2-1, in other Lackawanna Division 1 games.
Ron Prislupski scored four goals as Holy Cross also remained perfect on the season with a 6-1 Lackawanna Division 2 victory over Western Wayne.
Dunmore defeated Mountain View, 6-2, and Gregory the Great Academy edged Lakeland, 3-2, in other Lackawanna Division 2 games.
Tommy Clark had a goal and two assists for Dunmore.
Jake Gustin’s hat trick led Elk Lake to a 6-0 shutout of Montrose in Lackawanna Division 3.
Blue Ridge defeated Riverside, 3-1, in the other Lackawanna Division 3 game with the help of two goals by Gerald Welsted.
GIRLS SOCCER
Veronica Warunek scored two goals as Wyoming Valley West created a tie for first place in WVC Division 1 by handing Wilkes-Barre Area its first loss, 5-4.
Krystal Haertter scored twice for the Wolfpack.
Berwick edged Crestwood, 3-2, and Hazleton Area shut out Pittston Area, 2-0, in other WVC Division 1 games.
Kayla Fernandez scored two goals and assisted the other for Berwick.
Nanticoke defeated Tunkhannock, 6-1, in WVC Division 2.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Grace Nealon had seven kills and two digs as Holy Redeemer remained unbeaten in the WVC by defeating Hanover Area in four sets.
The Lady Royals won, 25-13, 16-25, 25-13, 25-22.
Megan Albrecht, who had two blocks and a dig, and Abby Williams each added five kills.
In other WVC matches: Nanticoke defeated Tunkhannock and Lake-Lehman downed MMI Prep, both by three-set sweeps.
GIRLS TENNIS
Holy Cross defeated Delaware Valley, 4-1, in a Lackawanna League match.
