Ayala extends Mid Valley streak

Mid Valley 1,000-yard rusher Devin Ayala

After Devin Ayala reached 1,000 rushing yards for the season early in Friday night’s game at Riverside, he kept going.

Ayala surpassed 200 yards for his third straight game a bit later and, again, he kept going.

The Mid Valley running back rushed for 336 yards and scored all his teams points as the Spartans battled past the Vikings, 24-21, to win their Lackawanna Football Conference Division 3 opener.

Mid Valley has won five straight since losing its season opener.

Riverside fell to 0-2 in the division and 2-4 overall.

Ayala averaged more than 10 yards for his 33 carries.

The Vikings led for most of the half, but the Spartans converted off an interception late in the second quarter. Ayala turned his only catch into a 14-yard touchdown from Cameron Riccardo for an 18-14 lead.

Ayala’s 33-yard touchdown run in the third quarter opened the lead to 24-14.

Riverside was led by the passing combination of Noah Parchinski to Reese Gaughan.

Parchinski was 19-for-33 passing for 280 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also carried 14 times for 35 yards.

Gaughan caught 13 passes for 170 yards and a touchdown. He also carried 8 times for 43 yards.
