Ayala, Riccardo lead Spartans rout

Mid Valley’s Devin Ayala

Devin Ayala’s designed runs and Cameron Riccardo’s scrambling ability combined Friday night to lead Mid Valley to 412 yards rushing in a 39-0 shutout of visiting West Scranton in a non-league game between Lackawanna Football Conference teams.

The Spartans improved to 3-1 by outgaining the winless Invaders, 563-120, in the renewal of a rivalry from the days when the teams were Big 11 rivals in the 1970s and ‘80s before Mid Valley moved to the old Suburban Conference.

Ayala carried 22 times for 201 yards and 2 touchdowns. Riccardo went 7-for-11 for 161 yards and 2 touchdowns passing while running for 131 yards and 2 other scores. Jayson Lowe caught 3 passes for 86 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Mid Valley stretched a 13-0 lead to 25-0 at halftime off of Riccardo’s ability to improvise.

Riccardo scrambled and was almost back to the line of scrimmage when he spotted Lowe deep down the middle for a 56-yard touchdown. Then, in the last minute of the half, he kept the ball in a similar situation and ran it in from 30 yards out.

He was just getting started.

Midway through the third quarter, a shot-gun snap sailed well over Riccardo’s head. The quarterback tracked it down, avoiding the charging Invaders, turned the corner around the right end and sprinted to a 70-yard touchdown.
