Spartans halt Lions streak, 21-7

Mid Valley used a long drive and a long run to rally past visiting Lackawanna Trail Friday night.

The Spartans drove 92 yards for their first score in the second quarter, then took the lead on a 98-yard Devin Ayala run in the third quarter on the way to a 21-7 victory in the non-league game between Lackawanna Football Conference teams.

Both teams are ranked among the Small Schools in the Gaughan Auto Store Super Six Power Rankings of LFC and Wyoming Valley Conference teams by NEPAFootball.com.

Mid Valley bounced back from having its six-game winning streak broken a week earlier to bring an end to Lackawanna Trail’s five-game streak.

The Spartans improved to 7-2 while the Lions slipped to 6-2.

Lackawanna Trail produced nearly half of its offense on the game-opening drive covering 66 yards and taking 7:35 off the clock.

Quarterback Lisk picked up two yards on fourth-and-one, then Hunter Patterson scored from the 3 on the next play and Xavier Ball added the kick for a 7-0 lead.

Mid Valley quarterback Cameron Riccardo faked a sweep and ran up the middle for a 19-yard touchdown to cap the second-quarter drive 1:32 before halftime, but a failed extra-point attempt left Lackawanna Trail with a 7-6 lead.

Johnny Halter’s punt pinned Mid Valley at the 1 midway through the third quarter.

On second-and-nine, Ayala went off right tackle, slipped two tackles early in the run, then won the race down the right sideline for a touchdown.

Josh Angelo, a two-way force in the line throughout the game, lined up in the backfield and ran for the two-pointer.

That was not Angelo’s last appearance as a back.

David Calafut’s sack for a nine-yard loss on a desperate fourth-and-32 try by Lackawanna Trail late in the game gave Mid Valley the ball at the 1.

Angelo lined up at fullback in the I-formation and went in for the touchdown with 1:07 remaining.
