Monahan-Rossi combo leads Cavs

Scranton Prep’s Robert Rossi

Sean Monahan, Robert Rossi and Quenten Palermo made it difficult to tell a key piece was missing from the Scranton Prep offense.

All three produced more than 200 yards as Scranton Prep shook off an early battle from host Tunkhannock to roll to a 52-21, non-league football road victory.

Monahan went 8-for-12 for 253 yards and 4 touchdowns passing.

Rossi caught all four of those touchdown passes. He turned 7 catches into 229 yards.

Palermo set up the first touchdown and ran for a later one while picking up 201 yards on 19 carries.

The win was the second straight for the unbeaten Cavaliers while playing without London Montgomery, who was averaging more than 255 yards per game on the ground. He has sat out those games for COVID precautions.

The Monahan-to-Rossi passing combination produced two touchdowns in the first quarter for a 20-7 lead.

Tunkhannock stayed within 26-14 at halftime and 32-21 midway through the third quarter before Monahan found Rossi for two more touchdowns to make it 45-21 going into the fourth quarter.

Palermo raced 67 yards on the game’s first play then Tae Weeks scored on a 10-yard run.

Rossi’s 50- and 80-yard touchdown receptions were sandwiched around a 2-yard Tunkhannock touchdown on a pass from Ben Chilson to Michael Sickler.

Tunkhannock’s Ty Konen ran 39 yards for the first of his two touchdowns to make it 20-14 with 9:28 left in the half.

Weeks scored on a 4-yard run midway through the quarter.

Palermo opened the second half with a 53-yard touchdown run in the first minute.

Konen ran 2 yards for the next touchdown before Monahan and Rossi combined to put the game away with 16- and 15-yard touchdowns.

Jamie Barrett added a short touchdown run late in the game for Scranton Prep.

Tunkhannock lost its fifth straight to drop to 2-6.
