James Sobol threw for three touchdowns and ran for the other Friday night while the Old Forge defense was shutting out visiting Dunmore until the final minute of a 28-7, non-league victory in a meeting of traditional Lackawanna Football Conference Small School powers.
Sobol finished 9-for-14 for 172 yards passing with Casey Holzman pulling in 5 of the passes for 105 yards.
The Blue Devils, ranked second in the state among Class A teams by PennLive.com, improved to 2-0. Dunmore is 0-2.
Both teams are defending District 2 champions. Dunmore won its title in Class 2A.
The Bucks, however, were no match for the Blue Devils Friday.
Old Forge opened a 21-0 lead at halftime and expanded it with another touchdown midway through the fourth quarter.
Sobol opened the scoring when he took a fourth-down quarterback sneak in from the 1 during the first quarter.
John Greenfield had an interception and 42-yard return with 9:31 left in the second quarter and Old Forge added to its lead less than four minutes later.
Sobol hit Holzman with a 26-yard touchdown pass, then connected with Mario Samony for what turned into a 56-yard touchdown 41 seconds before halftime.
Josh Spindler scored on a 4-yard pass midway through the fourth quarter.
Dunmore’s Danny Pigga broke the shutout with a 42-yard run with 28 seconds remaining.
