Spartans hold off Tigers comeback

Wyoming Valley West’s Conner Oliszewski

Isaiah Cobb ran for 184 yards and threw 1 of 3 touchdown passes for Wyoming Valley West, which opened a 20-point halftime lead, then held off a comeback by host Tunkhannock to post a 20-15 victory Friday night in a non-league football game between Wyoming Valley Conference teams.

Cobb carried 34 times, helping Wyoming Valley West control the ball and move the chains, but the only points he produced were with his arm to break a scoreless tie early in the second quarter.

Conner Olisewski pulled in a 14-yard touchdown pass from Cobb on a fourth-down, halfback-option pass.

Luke Buss then threw two more touchdown passes before the second quarter was over, hitting Olisewski with one and Nick Giza with the other.

Buss finished 7-for-14 for 128 yards passing, helping the Spartans (3-2) finish with 417 yards total offense. Olisewski caught 5 of those passes for 115 yards.

With Buss out of the lineup in the second half, Wyoming Valley West held on.

Ben Chilson threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Garrett Yuhas in the third quarter and scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak to cap a fourth-quarter drive by Tunkhannock.

The Tigers (2-3) moved into the Red Zone looking for the winning score, but Devon Suda’s end-zone interception ended that threat.
