District 2 Honor Roll

The top performances in District 2 sports from the week of Nov. 8-14:

Wyoming Area’s Usamah Alansari

USAMAH ALANSARI, Wyoming Area football

Alansari caught 4 passes for 162 yards, including a 67-yard touchdown early in the third quarter and a game-winning, 51-yarder midway through the fourth quarter of Wyoming Area’s 35-32 victory over Lakeland in the District 2 Class 3A semifinals. On defense, he made five tackles and assisted on two others.

ELLA BARBACCI, Wyoming Seminary field hockey

Barbacci had consecutive Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association state field hockey tournament hat tricks with three goals each in a 7-1, first-round rout of Susquehanna Township and a 5-1, quarterfinal victory over Boiling Springs.

Holy Redeemer’s Kaylee Gryboski

KAYLEE GRYBOSKI, Holy Redeemer, girls volleyball

Gryboski had 18 kills, 11 service points, 2 aces and 2 blocks while helping make Holy Redeemer the only team from the district to reach the PIAA quarterfinals. That performance came in a 25-14, 25-14, 26-24, first-round sweep of Wyalusing Valley. She also had 12 kills and 4 blocks in a 25-17, 25-15, 25-22 loss in the Class 2A quarterfinals.

RYDER MACHADO, Delaware Valley football

Machado’s 94-yard, fourth-quarter interception return for a touchdown turned the potential tying drive for Hazleton Area into the clinching score in Delaware Valley’s 35-20 victory in the District 2 Class 6A championship game. Machado also had three tackles, including one for a loss, two assists and two broken-up passes.

ALEX PAGOTTO, North Pocono boys soccer

Pagotto scored twice, both times on headers off corner kicks, to lead North Pocono past Danville, 4-1, for the first PIAA state tournament win in program history. The win put the Trojans in the state Class 3A quarterfinals as the only District 2 team to go that far this season. Pagotto assisted a goal with 1:53 left to make things interesting late, but North Pocono fell to Archbishop Wood, 4-3.

BIANCA PIZANO, Wyoming Area field hockey

Pizano helped Wyoming Area reach the state Class A semifinals with two victories. She scored in a 3-1 win at Bloomsburg, then had the first two goals of a 5-0 victory over Christopher Dock Mennonite. In the quarterfinal shutout, Pizano also helped out defensively from her center midfield position as the Lady Warriors did not allow a shot or penalty corner.

North Pocono’s Will Soma

WILL SOMA, North Pocono football

Soma did not need long to make an impact in North Pocono’s 41-26 victory over Dallas in the District 2 Class 4A semifinals. He broke up a third-down pass to stop the first Dallas drive, then threw a 41-yard touchdown pass on the first North Pocono offensive play. Soma went on to rush for 164 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries, along with intercepting a pass and making 5 tackles.
