Lions shut out Chargers in opener

Lackawanna Trail got touchdown runs from four different players while packing all of its scoring into a stretch of just over 17 minutes during the middle quarters Friday night on the way to a 28-0 victory at Carbondale in a non-league opener between Lackawanna Football Conference teams.

The game was the first for Carbondale head coach Jeff Arthur and the first for the Chargers since the 2019 season. Carbondale was one of two teams – Abington Heights was the other – to sit out the 2020 season as a COVID-19 precaution.

Lackawanna Trail took control of the defensive struggle in the second quarter and by halftime its wing-T ground game had churned out more than 150 yards.

Sophomore quarterback Stephen Jervis opened the scoring on a 15-yard run nine minutes before halftime.

The first three touchdowns of the season were produced by the Lions’ promising sophomore class.

Lukas Gumble, who picked up 68 yards on 5 first-half carries, ran 11 yards for a score and a 14-0 lead with 5:28 left in the half.

Hunter Patterson scored on a 12-yard run midway through the third quarter and Kody Cresswell closed the scoring on a 4-yarder less than four minutes later.

Lackawanna Trail held Carbondale to 30 yards rushing in the first half.
